Promoting Research Investigation in the Marine Environment (PRIME) is a summer internship program for community college students interested in developing research and outreach skills through hands-on experience working with marine scientists, practitioners, and marine informal educators. Two types of internships are offered through the program:

Students participating in Science Experience Internships will:

  • Increase their understanding of the process of science and how research is conducted and applied.
  • Increase their understanding of marine science content.
  • Gain professional skills in communicating science effectively.
  • Increase their awareness of the availability of marine science careers and increase skills on how to pursue these careers, including how to transfer to a four-year university.

Students participating in Science Communication and Outreach Internships will:

  • Increase their awareness of career/job opportunities in informal science education institutions (ISEI) and increase skills on how to pursue these careers, including how to transfer to a four-year university.
  • Develop project management and work place skills.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of ISEI organizations and management.
  • Increase their understanding of communication pedagogy.
  • Gain skills in communicating science effectively to informal audiences using various media (oral, text, Initiatives).

Interns spend 35-40 hours per week conducting lab, field, and/or site work, working on weekly journal assignments, attending seminars, and participating in other marine lab and PRIME program activities. All are required to give a final public presentation at the end of the internship. Interns receive a $2000 stipend and on-site housing is provided.
