COSEE-Pacific Partnerships has taken the lead in a partnership with regional volunteer-based organizations to support the development and implementation of the The Oregon Coast Ecoregion of the Oregon Master Naturalist Program by working with scientists to develop a modular curriculum that incorporates current knowledge of the ocean and the ocean literacy principles. The participation of scientists is crucial for ensuring that the volunteers who elect to participate in the program receive current, accurate information.

The Mission of the Oregon Master Naturalist Program is to develop a statewide corps of knowledgeable, skilled and dedicated volunteers who enrich their communities and enhance public awareness of Oregon's natural resources through conservation education, scientific inquiry and stewardship activities. The Oregon Coast portion of the program will teach participants about the natural history of Oregon’s coastal ecoregion and develops the master naturalist's ability to convey this knowledge to diverse audiences. Once in place, the program will engage citizens within their communities to promote understanding and stewardship of coastal and ocean resources and areas.

In 2010 and 2011, we identified scientists who piloted several modules of the coastal curriculum and presented material to adult participants, some of whom are currently volunteers in marine and aquatic education and stewardship Initiatives coast-wide in Oregon.
